Lucha libre icon Vampiro has already ended his retirement dramatically, making a surprise in-ring return on June 13, 2026, in Bangor, Maine. Originally booked solely as the host of MaskedMania after his advertised final match at JCW Strangle-Mania in April, the veteran stepped up to answer an open challenge from Sam Adonis. According to PWInsider.com, severe weather had caused major travel disruptions and last-minute roster changes, and therefore, Vampiro insisted on wrestling to send the fans home happy.
“Vampiro was booked to be the official host of Masked Republic’s MaskedMania event but ended up back in the ring unannounced as a last second surprise. Due to all the awful weather across the United States, a number of names including Juventud Guerrera were unable to get to Maine in time for the event. That led to Masked Republic reshuffling their lineup, but being left without someone to face Sam Adonis. We are told that Vampiro insisted on facing Adonis in the main event, coming out to answer an open challenge in order to make sure fans went home happy despite the issues facing the live event.” – PWInsider.com
Brief retirements are a common theme in professional wrestling, reflecting the sport’s addictive nature and its never-say-never spirit. Mick Foley famously “retired” after his infamous 2000 Hell in a Cell match, only to return weeks later. Jushin “Thunder” Liger had a grand retirement at Wrestle Kingdom in 2020 but made an unadvertised comeback at WrestleCon in 2025. Similarly, Ric Flair retired emotionally at WrestleMania 24 yet continued wrestling for years, while Terry Funk turned retirement into performance art with multiple last matches deep into his 70s.
