In a recent interview with Sports Illustrated, AEW President Tony Khan has reflected on the company’s improved storytelling in 2025, attributing it to a key shift in creative direction. Khan would admit that excessive input from multiple voices had previously diluted focus, but by late 2024, Khan decided to craft show outlines himself, scrapping group meetings. However, he still noted that he values direct feedback from the wrestlers involved.
43-year-old Khan, a lifelong professional wrestling fan, founded AEW in January 2019 and serves as its owner, president, CEO, head booker, and creative director. Backed by his family’s resources, he launched the promotion as an alternative to WWE, signing Chris Jericho, Cody Rhodes, Kenny Omega, The Young Bucks, and Jim Ross as his key talents. In 2022, he acquired ROH, making it a sister brand to AEW and creating numerous new opportunities for independent wrestlers. And while some online do complain about his booking, he has earned several Wrestling Observer awards and has secured multiple lucrative television contracts.
