In news that has caught the attention of pro wrestling historians, it has been uncovered by @allan_cheapshot on X that Cowboy Bob Ellis died in December 2018. This is notable because it was believed Ellis was currently the world’s oldest living wrestler at the age of 96, which was obviously incorrect. Therefore, either Australian Bill Verna, who is 95 or 96, or possibly Canadian Samson Burke, who is verified to be 95, now holds this status.
Ellis entered the wrestling business in 1957 after playing football and serving three years as an Army paratrooper. From there he would share a ring with names like The Iron Sheik, Angelo Poffo, Dick the Bruiser, Gene Kiniski and Verne Gagne. And while he held dozens of championships over his career, his most significant contribution to the business was inventing the Bulldog, which he used as his finishing maneuver.
