WWE announced on Backstage last night that Sami Zayn had been stripped of the Intercontinental Championship due to being unable to compete and defend the title. Zayn is currently at home, opting to not attend tapings during the COVID-19 pandemic, with his last appearance for WWE was at WrestleMania 36, where he retained his title against Daniel Bryan.
Some fans on social media have been critical of the WWE’s decision to take the title from Zayn, as Brock Lesnar would famously go months between title defenses, and with Jordan Devlin being unable to travel WWE introduced an Interim Cruiserweight Championship rather than take the belt off him.
This week’s SmackDown was taped last night and will feature the commencement of a tournament to crown a new champion.
