Rick Astley Discusses “Lovely” Experience With Ozzy Osbourne

Ozzy Osbourne once tried help Rick Astley roll with a new group of musicians. In a recent interview with Classic Rock Magazine, Astley said “The Prince Of Darkness” offered to recruit him a backing band during Astley’s heyday.

The offer came during Astley’s first trip to the U.S. after the success of his debut album where during his tour he crossed paths with the Osbournes.

Astley, a pop culture icon known for his hits “Never Gonna Give You Up” and “Together Forever,” explained: “(Ozzy) said, ‘Are you over here playing?’, and I said, ‘No, we’re just doing promo,’” Astley recalled. “And then went, ‘If you want to put a band together, let me know. I’ve worked with all the greats.’ And I knew he had – he’d worked with some of the best guitar players on that planet.”

Ozzy’s wife Sharon overheard the conversation and chimed in.

“Sharon just leaned over and said, ‘Will you shut up, he doesn’t want to play with your long-haired, tattooed f*cking monsters’,” Astley said.

“I was gobsmacked. The fact that he recognized me for one thing, but also because he thought he could put together the appropriate band for me to go out and play ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’ with. But what a lovely man for doing it.”

Astley is big rock fan, and he’s actually performed a cover of AC/DC’s “Highway To Hell” during his live shows. He’s become friends with the Foo Fighters as well after he covered their classic, “Everlong,” and he has also appeared with the band on stage.

The RickRolling social media craze helped revive Astley’s career, and he’s taken full advantage of the exposure ever since.
