Ric Flair Explains Why He Refused To Join Jesse Ventura’s Fight For Wrestlers’ Rights

Launching a pro wrestling union is a touchy subject, as while most performers agree that one is needed, few are prepared to risk their own careers to start one. And now, in a perfect example of this, Ric Flair revealed during a new interview that Jesse Ventura not only tried to convince Hulk Hogan to side with him to create a labor union, but also reached out to him. However, Flair declined, feeling that if he went along with the idea, the NWA would give his top spot to someone else.

“Nobody wants to do it because they’ll just move on without you. They wanted me and Hogan to do it. Hulk called me and I said, ‘I’m not jumping out there. They’ll just replace me.’ Jesse Ventura drove me crazy. ‘Come on, come on.’ I go, ‘Jesse, so I give up the NWA World Championship, walk out. They’ll just put the belt on DiBiase or back to Harley.’ It just wasn’t something I wanted to explore.”Ric Flair

For those unaware, Jesse Ventura, a prominent WWE commentator at the time, attempted to form a wrestlers’ union to advocate for better pay, benefits, and working conditions. Frustrated by the industry’s exploitative practices, Ventura felt that if he could get big names like Hogan on board ahead of WrestleMania 2, it would give him the leverage over Vince McMahon that was needed. Yet, Hogan would go on to spill the beans to McMahon instead, causing the idea to fizzle out.
