Pro wrestler Hana Kimura tragically committed suicide on May 23rd following a deluge of online abuse about her conduct on a Japanese reality TV show. The now-canceled show Terrace House aired on both Fuji Television and Netflix had shown Kimura striking out at another cast member who washed her wrestling outfit, causing it to shrink. You can watch the scene, which later came out as being staged below.
After her death, many of the 1200 shameful tweets that were sent to Kimura were deleted. However, the Metropolitan Police Department found a screenshot on Kimura’s phone of some particularly nasty ones, including “Is there any value to your life?” and “When are you going to die?”
Now, according to Asahi.com, the man in his 20s, who has apologized to Kimura’s family by e-mail, is currently being investigated for cyberbullying her. As he has admitted to the offense while being questioned, it’s believed to be only a matter of time before he is charged. The punishment for him abusing Kimura will either be up to 29 days in prison or a fine between 1,000 yen ($10), but no more than 10,000 yen ($100).
