M. Night’s Latest Film Set To Knock Avatar 2 From #1 Spot

Just as Punxsutawney Phil emerged from his sleep to see his shadow (ushering in 6 more weeks of winter), so too has the dreary release schedule of mid-winter movies. It’s a shadow that, with the influx of direct-to-streaming films, feels fainter and fainter, often consisting of low-tier comedies, as seen in the release of the buddy-sports flick ’80s for Brady’, and pretty much any genre film, with M. Night Shyamalan’s ‘Knock at the Cabin’ filling that void. Similar to M. Night’s previous film Old, another literary adaptation that received a more forgiving summer release back in July of 2021, Knock at the Cabin is set to make around $18 million in its initial Thursday through Sunday run; a little more than Old’s opening $16.8 million.

Based off the acclaimed horror novel, Cabin in the Woods by Paul Tremblay, Knock at the Cabin investigates the apocalyptic weight of the decision, putting a vacationing family’s horror up against a group of intruders who place an unthinkable ultimatum at their doorstep; one that could have global ramifications if unheeded. As expected with a new M. Night release, Knock at the Cabin arrives with the director’s usual critical divisiveness, drawing condemnation for feeling like “a series of missed opportunities” and for being wholly unsatisfying,” while Shyamalaniacs say it’s “the director’s best film since 2004’s The Village“.

Yet still, ‘Knock at the Cabin’ looks to dethrone the billion-dollar breaking monolith that is James Cameron’s ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’, a major feat despite the sequel holding tightly to the #1 spot for almost 8 weeks. While it might not be the achievement many think a unique, visionary director such as Shyamalan deserves, it is noteworthy in how horror as of late – particularly indie horror – has been flourishing in theaters, with films such as Terrifier 2 and Skinamarink performing well above expectations.

Will you be seeing ‘Knock at the Cabin’ this weekend?
