Simon Gotch has admitted on the Jasmin St. Claire’s Krazy Train Podcast that, at 43 years old with 25 years in the business, the appeal of a steady paycheck is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore. Despite enjoying the creative freedom of independent wrestling, the veteran revealed he frequently thinks about quitting, not due to a lack of passion or physical ability, but because of the constant financial stress. Gotch explained that inconsistent bookings create anxiety, leaving him feeling broke even with savings in the bank when weekends pass without work.
“As much as I enjoy the freedom, it is hard to deny that, as I get older, I’m at a point in my life where, because I’m 43 and I’ve been doing this for 25 year, the appeal of a regular paycheck is hard to deny. Even when I’ve said before that I’ve considered quitting wrestling, it’s never about not enjoying wrestling or not being able to do it physically anymore. It’s always about that stress of, ‘I’m not working this weekend, so if I’m not working this weekend, I’m not being paid. The weirdest thing is, you can have all the money in the bank, but when you don’t have consistent work, you always feel broke. ” – Simon Gotch
Released by WWE in April 2017 after a four-year run highlighted by his work as one-half of The Vaudevillains, Simon Gotch returned to the independent circuit. Initially wrestling as Simon Grimm, he later reclaimed his Gotch name and competed in numerous promotions, including Major League Wrestling, where he aligned with factions such as Team Filthy and Contra Unit. Gotch has also ventured into Japan with Pro Wrestling Noah, made a brief appearance for TNA Wrestling in 2024, and recently reunited with former partner Aiden English for independent bookings.
