While Mike Rome has been the ring announcer for both Raw and SmackDown, he is currently introducing NXT talent, having returned to the developmental brand due to his desire to be closer to his home in Orlando and reduce his travel. However, it appears at the moment his attention isn’t on his WWE career but the fact that his mother is in a coma. This would be disclosed by Rome himself via his Instagram Stories, with the 43-year-old asking his followers for “prayers.“
Rome, whose real name is Austin Michael Romero, grew up as a pro wrestling fan and always dreamed of one day working for WWE. Therefore, after spending much of his 20s working for Nickelodeon, Walt Disney World, and then Universal Studios, he decided to pursue a career with the company. Initially, this would see him debut in NXT as Michael Rome, but management deemed this too close to Michael Cole and thus shortened his first name. Subsequently, he has appeared on all of WWE’s major brands and even held the WWE 24/7 Championship for nine seconds, a fact that few are aware of, as it occurred at a house show.
