WWE Hall of Famer Booker T has criticized the controversial syringe spot from last weekend’s AEW Revolution pay-per-view, where MJF jammed a syringe into the mouth of Adam Page during their intense Texas Death Match. Though he didn’t watch the match, speaking on his podcast, Booker T called the moment “in poor taste,” linking it to real-world associations with needles and drug use. Additionally, he referenced a similar spot in a Swerve Strickland match and shared personal trauma from childhood, having witnessed a family member with a needle in their arm.
“Last time I saw a syringe used like that, it was in a Strickland match, and I didn’t think it was in great taste because, you know, I don’t know what these guys think or understand about needles and drugs and whatnot. But I’ve walked into a room, when I was a kid, on someone in my family, someone close to my family, with a needle in their arm, doing drugs. And it’s something that made me never want to even think about doing drugs like that … I didn’t see it, and I’m not going to comment on the match or anything like that, but I’m glad I didn’t see it.” – Booker T
Retired German deathmatch wrestler Thumbtack Jack introduced the controversial syringe spot into hardcore wrestling during the late 2000s, and previously called out Page for copying it without credit in 2024. Arguably, the most famous instance of this comes from his 2009 CZW Tournament of Death 8 bout, where DJ Hyde jammed syringes into Jack’s mouth. Yet while the spot delivers maximum shock value and visual gore, it is actually considered relatively safe, with clean insertions that heal quickly.
