WWE Hall Of Famer Shares Sad Details Of Virgil’s Final Years

On February 28, 2024, Mike Jones, best known for his time in WWE as Virgil sadly passed away. At the time of his death, it was believed he was 61 years old, although it later came out that he had been working everyone for decades and was actually 72, which, amazingly, nobody ever suspected.

And now, while speaking on The Wrestling Time Machine, WWE Hall Of Famer Teddy Long has commented on his friend’s death, confirming it came following a series of strokes. Additionally, he would note that things were so bad financially for Jones that the last time he saw him, he was hitchhiking to get around.

I talked to Tony Atlas today, and I asked him, Tony, have you heard anything about how he (Virgil) died? Tony said he had several strokes, whatever, and the last time I did see him, he wasn’t doing too good, man. He was trying to hitchhike a ride from somewhere to the next town or something, man. So Virgil just wasn’t doing good at all.”

Jones began wrestling in 1985 as Soul Train Jones before signing with WWE and becoming Ted DiBiase’s bodyguard. Subsequently, over the next several years, he’d be a heavily featured performer working alongside DiBiase, and later, he memorably feuded with him. However, despite this and a run in WCW as part of the nWo, a GoFundMe was still required to cover his funeral expenses, and thanks to 513 generous donors, over $16,000 was raised, ensuring he received a dignified send-off.
