WWE Change Mind On Letting Go Of “Dean Ambrose”

Jon Moxley competed as Dean Ambrose for WWE between 2011 to 2019 and became one of their biggest stars. Despite what is believed to have been a big-money offer to renew his contract, he opted to let it expire due to his unhappiness with WWE’s creative and specifically called out Vince McMahon for giving him what he considered to be low quality promo material.

Upon leaving WWE, he no longer could legally use the name Dean Ambrose and reverted to his previous wrestling name of Jon Moxley. Often losing an established name can hinder a wrestler’s career, but this wasn’t the case for Moxley, who has had great success in both AEW and New Japan without his WWE moniker.

Now though, despite opting to let their trademark on “Dean Ambrose” expire on August 28, 2020, WWE has reconsidered. This was revealed once the USPTO trademark reporting and monitoring database updated Tuesday morning. In the update, it showed Vince McMahon’s company filed a brand new trademark application under “entertainment services, namely, wrestling exhibitions and performances by a professional wrestler” on October 8, 2020.

It isn’t known why WWE has filed this new application, but it’s potentially to ensure Moxley doesn’t register it himself or to ensure they protect The Shield’s legacy. Trademarks have been a fundamental part of the wrestling industry for some time but became even more important since AEW launched. It was only recently that Cody Rhodes got his name back after seemingly agreeing to give up former WCW names he registered in exchange. Also, Ryback is currently in dispute with WWE after they renewed what he considers to be his name three years after he departed the company.
