WWE Appears To Have Updated Policy On Talent Names

Over the years, it has become somewhat comical regarding WWE’s policy of altering names, with countless talents losing their first names and, in some cases, surnames. And recently, several NXT talents that had already appeared on television had to change their names totally due to Vince McMahon not wanting anyone able to go from WWE to another promotion with an established name. Now, though, with McMahon no longer in control, it appears WWE has changed their approach, as in addition to Matt Riddle getting his first name back on this week’s Raw, PWInsider has reported that Theory has regained his first name of Austin.

Theory is no longer Theory. He will officially return to using his full ring name of Austin Theory going forward, PWInsider.com has confirmed. Matt Riddle will indeed 100% be going by his full name going forward as well, as seen on last night’s edition of Raw.

Vince McMahon apparently believed that mononym stage names made someone seem a bigger star, which has worked in the entertainment industry with the likes of Cher, Madonna, and Bono. And in some cases, such as Chyna and Sting, it has worked in wrestling. However, it comes across as silly when even lower card talents have single-word names. And ultimately, having two names never hurt the drawing power of Brock Lesnar, Steve Austin, John Cena, or Hulk Hogan.
