Following Vince McMahon’s departure from WWE, Jesse Ventura signed a Legends Contract and agreed to make occasional commentary. However, last month, Dave Meltzer reported in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that the decision had been made not to renew his broadcast contract. Apparently, this decision stemmed from dissatisfaction with Ventura’s on-air criticism of Damian Priest’s cage-match escape, which apparently embarrassed management.
Yet while his WWE departure could still be happening, WWE insider @WrestleVotes has now tweeted that the WWE Hall of Famer will be present at this weekend’s Saturday Night’s Main Event, which features John Cena’s retirement match. Whether he will appear on-screen is unclear, but it seems there are no hard feelings.
74-year-old Ventura, born James Janos, debuted in professional wrestling in 1974 as a heel with a bodybuilder persona. He wrestled primarily in the AWA and WWF from 1975 to 1986, notably winning the AWA World Tag Team Championship with Adrian Adonis in 1980. Sadly, blood clots ended his in-ring career in 1984, though he successfully transitioned to commentary, serving as a WWF color commentator from 1985 to 1990 and memorably co-hosting several WrestleMania’s.
