Tony Khan Defends AEW Safety Record Against William Regal’s Stark Warning

Recently, William Regal grabbed headlines after issuing a stern warning about dangerous high-risk spots in wrestling on X, following a scary moment at AEW Worlds End during Jon Moxley vs. Kyle Fletcher’s match when the Australian landed on his neck. And now, during a new interview with The Mark Hoke Show, AEW head honcho Tony Khan has addressed Regal’s tweet, noting there have been no career-ending neck injuries in his ring, and at times he steps in and tells talents, “I don’t think that’s a good idea.”

“Pro wrestlers are always taking hard-hitting and high-risk chances. That’s one of the things that makes pro wrestling so exciting. In AEW, we’ve been able to have all of these great events, and we’ve never had a career-ending injury like that from our wrestling. I don’t think that AEW is any different than any other wrestling promotion in the world. The wrestlers want to do their very best, and sometimes a promotion will step in. AEW and I have at times stepped in and said, ‘I can’t do that. I don’t think that’s a good idea.’ I don’t want to do that every day or every match, but there are times where it comes up, and that’s okay.”Tony Khan

Regal joined AEW in March 2022 after his WWE release, debuting at Revolution, forming the Blackpool Combat Club with Bryan Danielson and Jon Moxley. During this time, Khan praised Regal’s wrestling mind and valued his on-screen and potential backstage contributions. However, while their working relationship was positive, it was brief. This is because, in late 2022, Regal requested that AEW not renew his contract so he could return to WWE and coach his son, Charlie Dempsey. Khan would agree to this, with the only condition being that he didn’t appear on WWE television for a year, with no constraints on resigning from his backstage role.
