The Godfather Shares Update Following Car Accident

Charles Wright, also known as The Godfather and Papa Shango, is a beloved former WWE star, and therefore, when he shared a photograph on Instagram of what appears to be his Dodge Ram rental car wrecked, fans began to panic. Thus, Wright subsequently posted a brief follow-up video confirming that, despite three flips, he “came out of this without a scratch” and added, “I’m still smoking,” indicating he truly is fine.

“I just want everybody to know that I’m okay. I came out of this without a scratch. It’s just really bad weather here in West Virginia. We started hydroplaning. I wasn’t driving, but we started hydroplaning, then went into a three-truck roll. But, it’s going to take more than that to take me out. But thank you, everybody, for the concern. I just want to let everybody know I’m okay and I’m still smoking.”The Godfather

64-year-old Wright joined WWE in 1991, and while he initially debuted as Sir Charles, he was soon repackaged as a voodoo witch doctor named Papa Shango. Yet, despite working with some of the biggest names of the time, like The Undertaker, Ultimate Warrior, and Bret Hart, he would disappear from the company at the end of 1993.

Still, Wright would rejoin WWE in 1995, and while he portrayed multiple characters, none of them became popular, suggesting his career in the business might be coming to an end. Yet, thanks to the Attitude Era, he would become The Godfather, a character fondly remembered to this day for showcasing both the good and bad aspects of that period in professional wrestling, resulting in his induction into the WWE Hall of Fame as part of the 2016 class.
