Tay Melo Defends Sammy Guevara After Past Mercedes Moné Controversy Resurfaces

Sammy Guevara’s AEW career was nearly ruined in 2020 when a four-year-old podcast interview resurfaced where he shockingly said he wanted to “r*pe” then-WWE star Mercedes Moné. Obviously, this disgraceful comment needed addressing, and while he publicly apologized, he was also suspended by AEW, required to attend sensitivity training, and his pay went to the Women’s Center of Jacksonville.

Since then, Guevara has moved on from the controversy and become a father, with his wife Tay Melo recently giving birth. Yet, some fans aren’t quick to forget, and following reports that Moné is expected to join AEW shortly, his past remarks are again circulating on social media. And clearly being aware of this, Melo has come to her husband’s defense, saying, ” I just wish you all could see the real Sammy, the one I know.

“I get really upset when I see people hating on him or judging him for a mistake he did in 2016 ( I lived in Brazil & didn’t even speak English back then). I strongly disagree with his past mistakes but I also believe people pay for it, learn and grow. I didn’t meet the 2016 Sammy, I met a human that I know would not make the same mistakes.

The Sammy I met is a spectacular man. The Sammy I got married is an even more mature man that is so lovable, caring and responsible. The Sammy I had a daughter with is the BEST man I ever met, the man that put his family first, the man that took care of me and newborn baby in that hospital when I thought I wouldn’t make it alive, the man that makes me feel loved and amazing in the horrible postpartum I’m having. I just wish you all could see the real Sammy, the one I know.”

30-year-old Guevara broke into the business via Booker T’s wrestling school in 2010 and mainly worked on the indies over the next nine years. His big break would come in 2019 when AEW hired him as one of the first signings, and he went on to debut for the promotion during their inaugural pay-per-view Double or Nothing. From there, he would become part of Chris Jericho’s Inner Circle faction during the first episode of Dymaite, and since then, he has been prominently featured, winning the TNT Championship multiple times.
