Drummer Jay Weinberg joined Slipknot in 2014 following the departure of Joey Jordison. Weinberg is the son of longtime Bruce Springsteen drummer Max Weinberg, and has also performed with Against Me! and Madball, among others.
Weinberg played with Slipknot on Friday, but he didn’t last the rest of the weekend with the group as they announced they were parting ways with the 33-year-old drummer.
“We would like to thank Jay Weinberg for his dedication and passion over the past ten years,” Slipknot said in a statement on Sunday that has oddly since been deleted.
“No one can ever replace Joey Jordison’s original sound, style or energy, but Jay honored Joey’s parts and contributed to the last three albums and we, the band, and the fans appreciate it. But as ever, Slipknot is intent on evolving. The band has decided to make a creative decision, and to part ways with Jay. We wish Jay all the best and are very excited for what the future holds.”
Less than a week ago, Slipknot frontman Corey Taylor talked about the ups and downs between members of the group.
“We’re always up and down in Slipknot,” Taylor told the Feedback Def podcast. “We’re brothers, but we’re not always the best of friends. There’s a push and pull that comes with being in this band, and it’s largely because we’re all such different people… Now, you’re always going to be devoted to the band and and to each other, but, there’s a lot of times where, if you’re in disagreement with the people that you’re working with, or you’re creating with it’s gonna leak out once in a while, you know?”
Weinberg talked back in 2016 with Music Radar about taking the place of Jordison.
“Joey’s one of the greatest drummers we’ve ever had the privilege of witnessing,” Weinberg said. “So as a fan of the band and someone who respects the people and the music, I didn’t want to come in and try to be a copycat. That’s not interesting to me, that’s not interesting to the band and it would be insulting to everyone involved, including the fans.”
