Sabu Reveals Who His Upcoming Retirement Match Will Likely Be Against

Sabu is undoubtedly a pro wrestling legend, having taken hardcore wrestling mainstream thanks to runs in FMW and ECW; however, at age 59, his time in the ring is coming to an end. In fact, it was thought he was already retired, having not competed since 2021, although after diving through a table at AEW’s Double or Nothing pay-per-view last year, he has now shared during an interview with Stories with Brisco and Bradshaw that he plans to have a retirement match. And unsurprisingly, his final opponent is likely to be Rob Van Dam, who is known to be one of his closest friends, with the bout potentially being a barbed wire match.

“I’m hopefully setting up for my final match. I want to do a final match, maybe in July or later. It’s probably going to be against Van Dam. I heard Van Dam say something that he wanted to have a barbed wire match for my last match. I said I would rather have a regular match. I want to have one of my better matches. The barbed wire match is a gimmick. The gimmick is my final match. That’s the gimmick.”

Sabu

For those unaware, Sabu was one of the most innovative wrestlers of the 90s, and for a few years, people would debate whether he was the best performer in the world. However, the fact he didn’t have long runs in major promotions and developed a reputation as not being the smoothest performer compared to the likes of Shawn Michaels and Bret Hart would prevent him from attaining this status with the masses. He would, though, become a cult icon in ECW and was influential in putting the promotion on the map. Yet, this style of wrestling sadly destroyed his body, and in 2017, he had to undergo hip surgery, which was funded by a GoFundMe campaign.
