The Grammys have long been criticized for their lack of knowledge when it comes to rock and metal. Famously, Jethro Tull beat Metallica (as well as Iggy Pop, Jane’s Addiction and AC/DC) for “Best Hard Rock or Metal Performance” back in 1989. Eric Clapton took the award for “Best Rock Song” in 1993. His acoustic version of “Layla” beat Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit.”

In 2005, Motorhead won a “Best Metal Performance” Grammy for a cover of a Metallica song (“Whiplash”). In 2015, comedy rock duo Tenacious D won a “Best Metal Performance” Grammy for their cover of Dio’s “The Last In Line.”
