Matt Taven became Ring of Honor Champion at the ROH/NJPW G1 Supercard in April at Madison Square Garden. He defeated both Jay Lethal and Marty Scurll in a ladder match, and many fans weren’t happy. The widespread consensus was that Marty Scurll should have won and become the champion.
At the time the view was Scurll was almost certainly going to leave once his contract expired to join AEW. Due to that, Ring of Honor chose to go with Taven as the safer option, considering him a sure thing to stay with the company.
Well, it seems that might not work out as ROH had hoped as Taven’s contract is expiring at the end of September and the two sides have still not agreed on a new deal.
With the Wednesday Night Wars about to start this puts Taven in an enviable position with the potential of both WWE and AEW interested in his services. Worst case scenario for Taven seems that ROH will have to up their offer financially to keep their champion.
