When it comes to landing a major cameo in the world of professional wrestling, the emphasis isn’t always on physical feats. Instead, it’s about presenting audiences with a believable gimmick. The more intense and far-fetched, the better (usually.)
This type of approach has led to a long list of highly interesting and slightly surprising selections as guest appearances. Donald Trump is easily one of the most memorable, having appeared in multiple WWE shows. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Along with Trump, other memorable appearances include Snooki from The Jersey Shore and Criss Angel from Mind Freak, TV hosts like Jay Leno and Jon Stewart, and even fictional heroes like RoboCop and Chucky.
Not all were hits. Snooki was a notable flub, along with the recent attempt by the NFL’s Gronk to move into the realm of pro wrestling. Still, that doesn’t mean that fans aren’t open to a few well-placed cameos from celebrities who have strong attitudes and a flare for drama. Barring athletic feats and high-flying acrobatics, there are dozens of celebrities, great and small, who would excel in the ring.
Here are a few of our favorites.
Phil Hellmuth, the Poker Brat
Phil Hellmuth is one of the most well-known names in the world of professional poker. He’s known as the Poker Brat for his larger-than-life personality and willingness to say whatever comes to mind. In fact, he’s known for his insane tilt, which is when poker players struggle to deal with emotional downswings after a bad beat. Whether playing online or in person, it’s a common obstacle.
Despite his penchant for losing his cool, he’s managed to nab a record number of World Series of Poker bracelets. He’s done so more than once in a hilarious get-up, too. This combination of hardheaded sass and professional skill would, unsurprisingly, bode well for a guest appearance with the WWE or AEW.
John Daly, AKA Wild Thing
Similar to Phil Hellmuth, you probably don’t know who John Daly is. ‘Wild Thing’ went pro in the PGA back in 1987 when he famously hit the scene showcasing daring and colorful outfits. The world of professional golf is known for its gentleman’s approach to the game and its refined dress code—but Daly bashes that with his crazy outfits and legendary mullet.
On top of his stylistic differences, Daly is a bit of a loose cannon on the golf course. Throughout the course of his storied (and successful) career, Daly has been vocal about challenging decisions at official PGA Tour events and advocating for a myriad of interests.
Vin Diesel
If you follow the real-life feud between Vin Diesel and The Rock, then it’s easy to see the appeal of this potential appearance. Who could imagine a better face-off in the ring than The Rock taking on some kind of fictionalized version of Vin Diesel? Though it would be impossible to get him in the ring as Dominic Toretto, there’s fodder for plenty of other characters.
Diesel has also mentioned John Cena more than a few times. While he’s in a feud with The Rock, it’s no secret that Diesel has a lot of love for Cena. Seeing these two in the ring working together might not be quite as appealing as taking on The Rock, but it would absolutely be something that fans would sign up to see.
Dennis Rodman, AKA The Worm
Who could forget Dennis Rodman’s brief stint in World Championship Wrestling? He appeared in multiple variations of The Show alongside other celebrity athletes like Barry Bonds and legends like Hulk Hogan. But his time was, unsurprisingly, marred with controversy.
Rodman was known to clash with his teammates along with opponents in off-script lash-outs. Regardless, it was a highly satisfying act that was cut short by Rodman’s other enterprises. Twenty years later, plenty of fans are still waiting for a reappearance from The Worm.
