John Cena Sr. Addresses The Controversial Finish To His Son’s Retirement Match With Gunther

Following his son’s retirement at the conclusion of Saturday Night’s Main Event, John Cena Sr. has spoken about the controversial decision to have him tap out to Gunther. And now, in a just-released interview with Bill Apter, Cena Sr. noted that the crowd’s tears signaled a preference for a different finish, saying his son could have blacked out without tapping out, preserving his son’s never-give-up legacy while still elevating Gunther.

“The only thing I can say is that I saw a lot of people cry. Do I believe that’s the way it should have ended? I would have done it differently. I think it might have been better for everyone if it had ended differently … Did I expect a tap-out? I’ll be real honest with you, Bill, I would have expected a pass-out and still Gunther being the winner. I said, ‘I’m really not sure that’s a tap-out. I wonder if it’s a last effort to try to break the hold.’ And yeah, that would have been a good way to do it. Then Gunther would have clutched it even more, and Cena would have blacked out, period, without tapping out.”John Cena Sr.

Whether Gunther as his final opponent was Cena’s choice or WWE’s management remains unclear, but the nearly 24-minute main event was an excellent match. However, Cena’s submission loss, the first in over 20 years, left many fans disgruntled. Nevertheless, Cena still received a grand sendoff, with many members of the WWE roster, several legends, and executives surrounding the ring in tribute. At the same time, Cody Rhodes and CM Punk placed their titles on his shoulders as the ultimate sign of respect.
