Joey Ryan’s wrestling career effectively ended in 2020 due to multiple allegations made against him as part of the #SpeakingOut movement. At the time, the shamed Impact Wrestling talent would try to clear his name by denying the claims and suing three of the alleged victims, but this backfired, and pro wrestling fans turned against him even more.
And now, less than 24 hours after Portland Wrestling announced that 45-year-old Ryan would be wrestling at their August 23 show, there has been so much backlash online that the promoter has already advised fans on Facebook that he has canceled his plane ticket. Whether this is because he genuinely had second thoughts about working with the controversial wrestler or has been bullied online is unclear, but regardless, Ryan’s comeback is off.
Since the horrendous allegations were made against Ryan, he has found religion, followed a 12-step program, and attended weekly meetings to address his addictions. He has also dropped all his lawsuits against those who accused him, seemingly having realized they were pointless, as he had already been found guilty in the country of public opinion. Yet despite his insistence that he has turned his life around, he remains as detested today as he was in 2020, and will likely never wrestle again unless he promotes his own show.
