Jeff Jarrett has firmly rejected the long-standing narrative that TNA was born out of desperation after WCW folded and WWE no longer wanted him. Speaking to Chris Van Vliet, the TNA co-founder clarified that while Vince McMahon “fired” him on television, he continued receiving pay under his WCW contract for many more months. Then, rather than scrambling for work, Jarrett recognized a major opportunity in a WWE-dominated landscape and launched TNA as a strategic business move to fill a significant void in the industry, not as a last-ditch effort to have a job.
“I’ve been let go, fired numerous times. But the reality was Vince did quote-unquote fire me on TV. But I was still going to have a contract for the next seven or eight, nine months. So that was a storyline that has grown, that Jeff got fired and started TNA. The reality was I was paid through the end of October … I never made a call to say, ‘Hey man, JR, Vince, you got a job for me?’ You just kind of look back and know your place in the industry and go, you have no leverage, none. It certainly wasn’t a wrestler’s market. Vince, without a number two, there is no number one. It was Vince owning the entire game… You know, TNA, just the narrative that is out there, as you say, it was built out of desperation. I believe it was built out of an opportunity.” – Jeff Jarrett
TNA officially launched in June 2002, created by both Jeff Jarrett and his legendary father, Jerry, and initially stood out for its innovative weekly pay-per-view format, which allowed fans to order individual events. Based in the Nashville area, TNA quickly gained fans’ attention with its high-flying X Division action and blend of veteran stars working with rising talents like AJ Styles. From there, the bold underdog promotion quickly established itself as a genuine number-two promotion for several years and, at times, even aspired to take the top spot.
