Guitarist Joe Perry Lays Out Plans For Aerosmith’s Future

Aerosmith has unfortunately been in the headlines recently for the wrong reasons. Earlier this year, the band was forced to cancel concerts due to singer Steven Tyler’s undisclosed illness.

Prior to that last year, the band canceled shows when it was revealed that Tyler had entered a treatment program after relapsing on pain medication following foot surgery.

Tyler was also the target of some disturbing allegations in a recent lawsuit. The singer is being accused of sexual assault of a minor, battery and intentional infliction of emotional distress. He has since requested the suit’s dismissal claiming that his accuser “has not suffered any injury or damage as a result of any action.”

In news that’s finally musical in nature, guitarist Joe Perry has told New York’s 102.3 WBAB that Aerosmith plans to tour in celebration of the 50th anniversary of their debut album.

“Yeah, I think that… I don’t know if I’m not supposed to announce it or not, but we are gonna announce the tour, and it’s gonna start in September and will go into next year. And being one of the guys who votes on this kind of thing, it looks like we’re gonna do it. [Laughs]”

Perry was also asked if Aerosmith drummer Joey Kramer would be back in the fold after announcing last year than he was sitting out concerts to “focus his full attention on his family during these uncertain times.”

Perry said: “That’s probably one of the hardest things. I’ve gotta say drumming is probably one of the most athletic parts of playing in a band. So it’s really hard. It’s been mostly because he just physically [has been] just beating himself up over the last 50 years. So I don’t know. I mean, he’s still officially a member of the band, but I don’t think he’s gonna be sitting behind the drums, at least for this next run. Other than that, I really can’t say.”

Perry also talked about the potential for future music from Aerosmith.

“At this point, I can’t say,” he said. “I really don’t know. But I know that we have a pile of material that hasn’t been released. So I think we’re focusing on that right now. But the main thing is just getting this tour up and running.”
