Green Day performed recently at Johannesburg’s FNB Stadium, marking the band’s debut in South Africa. During the performance of their 2004 hit “American Idiot,” singer Billie Joe Armstrong swapped the original lyric of “I’m not a part of the redneck agenda” with “I’m not a part of the Elon agenda,” taking a jab at the billionaire businessman.
The shot from Armstrong comes after controversy surrounding Musk’s behavior at President Donald Trump’s recent inauguration. Musk made a hand gesture that drew comparisons to a Nazi salute, although the Tesla/X owner dismissed the criticism calling it a “tired” attack.
Armstrong has been vocal in his disdain for both Trump and Musk in the past. Musk previously responded to the band: “Green Day goes from raging against the machine to milquetoastedly raging for it.”
The band’s bassist Mike Dirnt told The Independent: “Elon Musk actually is the machine. I can’t take anything else from that. He’s not shy about saying stupid s**t on the internet. Whatever. The song’s twenty years old, and we’re Green Day. What did you expect?”
