R-Truth was one of WWE’s most popular wrestlers for almost two decades, but announced this weekend he’d be departing the company after the decision was made by management not to renew his contract. However, according to former WWE commentator Jonathan Coachman on The Coach & Bro Show, WWE was actually open to keeping R-Truth on the roster, provided he took a pay cut, which he was unwilling to accept.
53-year-old R-Truth initially broke into the business in the late 1990s as a manager, seeking to turn his life around after being incarcerated a few years earlier and not wanting to experience that again. And while it was a long shot, he would send a video to WWE just two years into his career, which, thanks to his look and charisma, led to his hiring to perform as K-Kwik.
Still, that first run with the company only lasted a couple of years, and he’d spend several years in TNA and working on the indies before getting another opportunity with WWE in 2008. From there, he would become a recurring character on WWE television and notably headlined Survivor Series 2011 alongside The Miz against The Rock and John Cena in a match that was a massive deal at the time.
