Former Metallica Bassist Shares Opinion Of Band Now

Earlier this week, former Metallica bassist Jason Newsted announced he was resurrecting his solo band for a show next month in Florida. While the bassist said that for now it’s just a one-off, it could lead to more gigs in the future.

In an interview with Sirius XM’s Eddie Trunk, Newsted went on to share his opinion of Metallica now.

“I’ve texted back and forth with Lars the last couple of days. We try to stay in touch — he and I do — and talk about whatever,” Newsted said.

”He’s interested in my art a lot; he’s always been very supportive of that, so I’m grateful. But also with the music stuff… And I know that his sons — I’m a fan of them and they’re fans of my stuff, and that’s a cool thing. It’s an incredible thing, actually. And I’ve got nothing but mad respect. That’s it. That’s what I’ve got. And I’m so frickin’ proud of those guys. Still cutting it like that, man? C’mon now. And taking this big of a bite and going for shows all the way up through — what? — fall of ’24 or something? Frickin’ huge balls, dude. Incredible. How can’t you applaud that? … I’m always surprised. It was obviously meant to be. Who has this kind of staying power? I mean, it’s such a unique thing — such a unique thing.”

Newsted went on to say: “They sound killer right now. They have for a while live. They’ve got a great thing going, man, for real. It sounds killer.”

A few weeks back, Lars Ulrich shared how low he thinks Metallica will keep performing

“As I get older, I spend more and more of my time on my daily workouts, on my cardio, on my strength training. I’m chained to my Peloton hours a day. It’s all about trying to stay healthy: eating healthy, living healthy, whatever it is each of us need to bring to the table,” Ulrich said.

“Obviously, there is a point where it’s maybe not going to function anymore at some level, where we can’t play ‘Battery’ or ‘Master Of Puppets’ or songs like that. I know there’s some people in the comments section that think that point has already come — and I appreciate that. [Laughs] But the only thing I can say is that it hasn’t happened yet, knock on wood. Hopefully it won’t happen for a while. I mean, McCartney’s out there past his 80th birthday. The Rolling Stones are still out there. Springsteen just started his tour.”
