Golden Gloves boxer Doug Stahl, best known to fans as the towering Super Destroyer #2 during ECW’s formative years, has passed away at age 63. Lifelong friend and fellow wrestler Butch Hess broke the news on social media, remembering their unbreakable bond that began in first grade. Stahl bravely defended Hess from childhood bullies, played high school football together, and later pursued professional wrestling. Hess even tagged with Stahl in his emotional final match in 2006.
“Tonight, my oldest friend in the world, Doug Stahl, passed away. We had been friends since first grade. He would always stand up for me when I was younger and getting bullied and picked on because of my facial scars. We were in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts together, played high school football together, and we both went into professional wrestling—him far more successfully than me. Standing 6’6” and weighing 325 pounds, Doug Stahl from Hagerstown, Maryland, debuted in 1988 after being trained by Afa Anoa’i. He achieved his greatest success in 1992 as one half of the masked heel team The Super Destroyers with A.J. Petrucci in ECW when the duo captured the inaugural ECW Tag Team Championship in a tournament final and held the titles for a record 283 days. And while not part of ECW’s golden era under Paul Heyman, Stahl continued wrestling on the independents until his retirement in 2006.
