Former AEW Wrestler Defends The Company For Renewing Jake Roberts’ Contract

Jake Roberts recently revealed on his podcast that he had signed on for another year with AEW, making fans of the WWE Hall of Famer very happy. However, some fans on social media criticized AEW and Tony Khan for keeping someone on the payroll who has been an infrequent on-screen contributor in recent years. And subsequently, former AEW wrestler Joey Janela has come to the promotions defense on X, noting that Roberts deserves to be under contract for his contributions to the business.

“Every wrestling fan complaining about this or going “wHY?” is quite frankly a f*cking loser. Jake turned around his life in a big way and deserves to be compensated for the rest of his life for his contributions to this business.”

68-year-old Roberts first debuted for AEW during their The Road to All Out special in 2019. He’d then appear on the March 4th, 2020, episode of Dynamite, confronting Cody Rhodes. Initially, he was on a short-term deal that kept being extended, but Khan was so happy with his work that eventually, he signed him to a multi-year full-time contract. Sadly, it’s believed Roberts still has some health issues, which could be why his on-screen time has been restricted, although it appears Khan appreciates him for what he brings to his company in a backstage capacity
