On a recent episode of Talk Is Jericho, “Dark Side Of The Ring” co-creator Evan Husney joined Chris Jericho to preview the seventh season of the highly-successful wrestling documentary series. Topics for the upcoming season (premiering July 7 on VICE TV) include a 3-part installment on Jeff Jarrett and TNA, an infamous and brutal match between Samoa Joe and Necro Butcher, stories on the Big Boss Man, Paul Orndorff and more.
While discussing VICE TV spinoffs that have adopted the “Dark Side” moniker, Husney went on to credit his mom for naming the series. He also revealed what the show was nearly called prior to his mother’s suggestion. “I have to say, too, before I get called out, shoutout to my mom who came up with ‘Dark Side Of The Ring’ as a title,” Husney said. “We were struggling so hard to come up with a title for the show, and she just blurted it out on the phone, ‘What about ‘Dark Side Of The Ring?,’and I was like, ‘Woah, that actually might work.’”
Jericho, who has served as the show’s narrator for nearly its entire run, asked what other “lame” titles were being pitched by the network at the time. “Oh, the worst one, literally this is a real conversation,” Husney explained. “One of the internal producers at VICE called me and said, ‘If you don’t think of a better name than this, this is gonna be the name, I’m sorry.’ And the name was ‘Ring Of Pain.’ I was like, ‘Dude, that’s hemorrhoids! You can’t call it ‘Ring Of Pain!’ Just imagine if we were here doing the seventh season of ‘Ring Of Pain.’”
Jericho laughed and replied, “No, we wouldn’t. I don’t think we would’ve made it this far.”
