Dan Spivey was a professional wrestler for just over a decade, during which he worked for WWE, WCW, and All Japan. However, he never reached the heights in the business many thought a 6 ft 7, 290lb former All-American football player should. And now, during a new interview, Spivey has discussed his career and called his decision to rebrand himself as the “Golden Boy” in the mid-80s one of the “stupidest things I did,” saying he wished he’d neve done it. This is because, according to Spivey, it led to his departure from WWE, as Vince McMahon felt he looked too similar to Hulk Hogan.
72-year-old Spivey’s wrestling career is a case of what could have been, as he actually returned to WWE in 1995, utilizing a Cape Fear-inspired gimmick named Waylon Mercy and looked set to be a star. Yet, after working with names such as Bret Hart, Razor Ramon, and Diesel, he was forced to retire due to injuries. Still, it’s common knowledge that this run heavily influenced Bray Wyatt with Mercy the Buzzard in the Firefly Funhouse segments, directly coming from Spivey’s character.
