Damien Sandow is currently wrestling for Billy Corgan’s NWA promotion under the name Aron Stevens and is set to face Trevor Murdoch at June’s Always Ready event. Now though, the match has been billed as Stevens’ “Swang Song,” with the former WWE start stating on Instagram that the match will mark the finale of his professional wrestling career. However, it should be noted Stevens’ comments are clearly in character, so it very well could be part of a storyline or an attempt by the NWA to attract fans to purchase the event.
Stevens is only 39 years old, so it seems odd for him to retire at such a young age unless he has unreported injuries. Nevertheless, suppose it is indeed the end of his career. In that case, it will undoubtedly be seen as one that never met its potential. That is because Stevens seemingly had everything required to make it to the top of WWE, with outstanding mic skills, a good look, and solid in-ring ability. Yet he never made it to main event status despite winning Money On The Bank back in 2013. A big reason for this was he was never pushed during this time as a star, and he would ultimately lose to John Cena when he attempted to cash in. From there, he would fall down the card despite still being popular with fans, especially as part of the Mizdow team.
Following his WWE departure, he joined TNA, and given how popular he had been at times during his WWE run, it appeared he would become a featured talent. Yet his Liberace-inspired gimmick was heavily criticized at the time, with some fans blaming the promotion for wasting him. Later though, it would become known he created the gimmick himself. Then less than a year with the company, he would depart to focus on acting, with him since appearing in several minor television roles and a Lola Blanc music video.
