Cody Rhodes Forced To Withdraw Trademark Applications Due To WWE Opposition

Since March 2019, Cody Rhodes has been on a mission to take ownership of several former World Championship Wrestling trademarks his father created for the promotion. WWE had taken ownership of them when they purchased WCW in 2001 but had allowed some to expire. Cody, believing this opened the door for him to take control of them, made a number of trademark applications, which included requests for “Slamboree” and “The Match Beyond.”

Once WWE found out about these filings, they filed an opposition, and Cody had until 31st October to state why he should be given the trademarks for “Slamboree” and “The Match Beyond” over WWE. It has now been reported that Cody has officially withdrawn his trademark filings for both of these through his trademark attorney Michael E. Dockins.

Cody has made no statement on this, but as WWE does air past Slamboree pay-per-views on the WWE Network, and The Match Beyond is a reference to WarGames, he possibly didn’t believe he would win. Cody still has other trademarks being processed, including “SuperBrawl,” but that was initially refused, and he has until April 2021 to reply.

With former WCW names being used for NXT events, it will be interesting whether some of the names Cody attempted to trademark end up being used by WWE.
