Backstage News On Why Luchasaurus Was Written Off AEW Television

During the December 31, 2025, episode of Dynamite New Year’s Smash, Luchasaurus would make an appearance, accompanying Jack Perry, with his shoulder noticeably wrapped.  Subsequently, the former Big Brother contestant was attacked by Toa Liona and Bishop Kaun, which appeared to be writing him off television for the foreseeable future. And now Fightful Select reports that this was done because the 40-year-old has sustained a legitimate shoulder injury.

“This past weekend at AEW Worlds End, AEW got creative with Luchasaurus’ use on the show. On the December 31 episode of AEW Dynamite, he appeared with a giant wrap on his shoulder. He then got attacked by Toa Liona and sent backstage during the match. We’re told that Luchasaurus’ injury is legitimate, and he’s expected to miss time in the ring as a result. We haven’t heard the specifics of the injury, if surgery will be required.”Fightful Select

Luchasaurus, real name Austin Matelson, previously wrestled for WWE’s NXT brand as Judas Devlin and also worked in Lucha Underground. However, his biggest fame came once he joined AEW in 2019, when he won tag team, trios, and singles gold. Yet his career was seriously derailed when he was hospitalized with double pneumonia in 2024, making the injury news even more unfortunate.
