Andrade Says “I Needed To Leave To Remember Who I Was” Following WWE Return

In the hours leading up to AEW’s Worlds End pay-per-view, the word spread on social media that Andrade El Idolo was finishing up with Tony Khan’s promotion after the show. And now, having made his WWE return during the men’s Royal Rumble match, he has told Byron Saxton during a post-show interview that he “needed to leave to remember who I was.

“I’m happy to be here, be back. I needed to leave to remember who I was. But now? I am back, and I know who he is. But remember, now? Nobody is stopping me.”

34-year-old Andrade’s big break in the business came when he joined CMLL in 2007, and after also wrestling for New Japan for several years, he caught the attention of WWE. This saw him sign a developmental deal in 2015, and he would go on to become NXT Champion and later United States Champion on the main roster.

Still, he would become disgruntled with his booking and asked for his release in 2021, and while it was initially refused, the company would go on to grant this, which opened the door for him to become All Elite for a period.
