Almost a year ago, AEW filed trademark applications for “El Clon” and “The Clone,” which were speculated to be related to the Tony Khan-created luchador Hologram. Yet while it took some time, AEW would finally pull the trigger on a heel Hologram character during the latest episode of Collision, where the lights turned red and the words “Clon Activated,” “Access Granted,” and “Soon” appeared on the big screen.
And now, with fans trying to figure out who is under the second Hologram mask, LuchaBlog has reported that the heel version is Arez. Apparently, WWE played a significant part in AEW finally signing him and implementing the angle, as according to the report, WWE offered Arez a deal to return to AAA, which he subsequently told AEW about.
33-year-old Arez broke into the business in 2007 and worked on the Mexican indie screen over the next decade. His big break would come in 2018 when he joined AAA full-time, which opened the door for him to wrestle internationally, with MLW, GCW, and Billy Corgan’s NWA allowing him to wrestle in front of American crowds. Therefore, it’s unsurprising that both AEW and WWE took notice, and a big decision needed to be made.
