Earlier this summer, it was sadly reported that rock legends Aerosmith were canceling their “Peace Out” farewell tour and retiring “from the touring stage” following an injury sustained by singer Steven Tyler.
“We’ve always wanted to blow your mind when performing,” the band said in a statement. “As you know, Steven’s voice is an instrument like no other. He has spent months tirelessly working on getting his voice to where it was before his injury. We’ve seen him struggling despite having the best medical team by his side. Sadly, it is clear, that a full recovery from his vocal injury is not possible. We have made a heartbreaking and difficult, but necessary, decision – as a band of brothers – to retire from the touring stage.”
In a new interview with Charlie Kendall’s Metalshop, Aerosmith bassist Tom Hamilton addressed Tyler’s injury and talked about whether or not there’s any kind of future for the band.
“First let me start by clearing up some information on Steven’s injury,” Hamilton wrote via e-mail. “We were playing the third show of our ‘Peace Out’ tour last September. During the third song of the set Steven had a fall that resulted in a fracture to his larynx. Somehow he finished the show. Don’t ask me how. It’s a testament to his strength and desire to give the people what they came for. It wasn’t a case of him blowing his throat out by doing something wrong. He has been healing well and working his ass off to get ready to go back out on the road but it just wasn’t possible. We don’t know what the future holds but it won’t include touring.”
He continued: “The decision was made by the team which includes the band and our dedicated management.”
Hamilton dismissed the possibility of Aerosmith continuing with a new singer. “There’s been no talk at all about going on the road with another singer,” he said. “I can’t imagine it.”
As for the future? “I’m sure all of us have music in our future and it will manifest itself in ways that we haven’t planned yet,” he said. “I’ve been playing in a band with some good friends. We have a bunch of really good songs and we hope to be putting them out soon and hopefully doing some gigs.”
