Triple H Defends Decision To Have John Cena Lose His Last Match

In a post-show event following Saturday Night’s Main Event, Triple H has defended the controversial decision to have John Cena put over Gunther in his retirement match. He would do this by emphasizing that Cena has embodied the philosophy of “leaving this place better than you found it” throughout his career, and by acknowledging that while some fans struggle to grasp this decision in the moment, he is prioritizing what’s best for the business.

“John has said the right thing his entire career, that it is about leaving this place better than you found it. I think that people don’t, you know, there’s no way for people to understand that in the moment, you know? But you do what is right for the business. You do what is right for this industry. John has done that his entire career, and I’m going to do that my entire career. What I will do, what I believe is right for this business, it just is what it is. And I understand that tough for people to understand, but, you know, it’s part of what we do that is the role we have chosen.”Triple H

Following Cena’s loss via submission to Gunther, fierce backlash erupted against Triple H over his booking. Fans booed him relentlessly with “you f*cked up” chants in the arena, souring what should have been a special moment. Subsequently, fans online would spam the post-show YouTube stream by typing “We Want Vince” nonstop. Still, it is the time-honored tradition for wrestlers to go out on a loss, and most fans expected Gunther to go over as the result, even if they didn’t want that.
