The Rock Opens Up About Heartbreaking Personal Regret

In a new interview with Joel Madden, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has opened up about the profound personal regret that he and his father, Rocky Johnson, were not on speaking terms when he passed away in January 2020. Their estrangement followed a heated argument during Christmas 2019, with the wrestling legend passing away just a few weeks later from a blockage in the lung’s artery caused by a blood clot from deep vein thrombosis in his leg. Still, despite the unresolved tension, The Rock feels an even stronger spiritual connection to his father in reflection.

“We got into this huge fight Christmas 2019, it was awful. One of the biggest fights we ever got into about some just some stupid, and then about a month later, he passed away. And we weren’t talking. He called me, and I didn’t take the call; I was at my kid’s game. I thought, ‘I’ll call him back.’ And then like a day or two later, he’s gone … And something happened when he passed away, I feel like we’re closer than we ever were when he was here.”The Rock

Johnson, born Wayde Douglas Bowles in Nova Scotia, Canada, was a pioneering professional wrestler. Debuting in the mid-1960s, he excelled in the NWA, becoming the first Black Georgia Heavyweight Champion and holding multiple regional titles. In 1983, with Tony Atlas, he made history as half of the first black WWF Tag Team Champions. After retiring in 1991, he was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame by his son in 2008, an event that, at the time, was likely a highlight for both men.
