After podcaster and comedian Joe Rogan took to Instagram to explain his position on the Spotify controversy involving 76-year-old rocker Neil Young, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson showed his support in the comments section of Rogan’s video. “Great stuff here brother,” Johnson wrote. “Perfectly articulated. Look forward to coming on one day and breaking out the tequila with you.”

“I’m not a doctor. I’m not a scientist. I’m just a person who sits down and talks to people and has conversations with them,” Rogan explained in his post about his show “The Joe Rogan Experience.” “Do I get things wrong? Absolutely. I get things wrong, but I try to correct them whenever I get something wrong. I try to correct it because I’m interested in telling the truth.” Young told Spotify days earlier that “They can have Rogan or Young. Not both,” and demanded that the streaming service remove his music from their platform.

“… But whenever you’re in a situation where you have to say ‘I’m not racist,’ you f*cked up.’ And I clearly have f*cked up … There’s nothing I can do to take that back, I wish I could.

Now, Johnson is backtracking somewhat on his comments following a response from New York Times bestselling author, Don Winslow, who questioned The Rock for his support of Rogan. “You’re a hero to many people and using your platform to defend Joe Rogan, a guy that used and laughed about using the N word dozens of times, is a terrible use of your power,” Wilson tweeted at The Rock. “Have you actually listened to this man’s many racist statements about Black people?”

Johnson responded: “Thank you so much for this I hear you as well as everyone here 100% I was not aware of his N word use prior to my comments, but now I’ve become educated to his complete narrative. Learning moment for me. Mahalo, brother and have a great & productive weekend.”

Rogan responded with another explanation on Instagram addressing “the most regretful and shameful thing that I’ve ever had to talk about publicly. There’s a video out that’s a compilation of me saying the N word. It’s a video that’s made of clips taken out of context of me of 12 years of conversations on my podcast. It’s all smooshed together, and it looks f*cking horrible, even to me.”

Rogan further explained that he hasn’t used the word in many years. “I know to most people there’s not a context where a white person is allowed to say that word,” he said. “Nevermind publicly on a podcast. I agree with that now. I haven’t said it in years.” Rogan said that when he used the word, he was referring to comedians such as Red Foxx, Richard Pryor, Paul Mooney and Lenny Bruce using it as part of comedy routines, as well as director Quentin Tarantino’s use of the word in “Pulp Fiction.”

“I never used it to be racist, because I’m not racist” he said. “But whenever you’re in a situation where you have to say ‘I’m not racist,’ you f*cked up.’ And I clearly have f*cked up … There’s nothing I can do to take that back, I wish I could. I do hope that if anything this can be a teachable moment… for anybody that doesn’t’ realize how offense that word can becoming out of a white person’s mouth in context or out of context. My sincere and deepest apologies. Much love.”
