On a recent episode of Talk Is Jericho, six-time UFC Champion Randy Couture talked about a variety of topics including Kurt Angle, his fights with Chuck Liddell, Brock Lesnar and Vitor Belfort, as well as his thoughts on the upcoming Mike Tyson-Jake Paul fight. The match was originally set for July 20 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, and the event will be streamed globally via Netflix. The fight unfortunately had to be postponed due to Tyson having an ulcer flare-up which would have limited his training.
According to Netflix: “The fight will be rescheduled for a date later this year after Mike’s able to resume training with no limitations and both fighters can have equal time to prepare for this once-in-a-lifetime matchup!”
Couture shared his thoughts on the fight: “I think obviously Jake Paul, his last fight was against a legitimate boxing guy in (Tommy) Fury,. In my opinion (Fury) is the first real lifetime boxer he’s chose to crossover and fight. He certainly bit off a lot with Mike Tyson. I don’t care that Tyson is 59. Mike is still banging. Mike is still training hard. This is as sharp as we’ve seen Mike in quite a while, and I feel like Mike feels like he has something to prove. In some ways kind of clean up some of this by stepping in there with Jake Paul.”
Couture continued: “And Jake Paul, he’s backed it up. He’s stepped in there. He’s beat some very formidable opponents. Guys I didn’t think he would beat, honestly. And so, put your money where your mouth is. If you’re willing to step in there and back it up, I’ve gotta respect that. I’m not a big fan of the rhetoric and the trolling and some of his other stuff, that’s just not me. But, at the end of the day, he’s put his money where his mouth is. He’s gotten into that ring. And he’s backed it up.”
Couture hinted that even though he’s more than 30 years his senior, Tyson will have the advantage over Paul. “I think he’s in over his head with Mike,” Couture said. “And I think there’s a lot of people that are gonna wanna tune in to see (Paul get beat), honestly. (Tyson) was literally at the top of the game for a long, long time. Knocked out some of the best fighters in the sport. Looks to be in good form. He’s still got the speed, the power, the head movement. He’s gonna come waddling in there and let those hooks rip. It’s gonna be really, really interesting.”
