It’s True Crime Week on TIJ, and starting us off, one of the biggest cases of the last year – the Gilgo Beach serial killings! These were a series of murders of mostly sex workers spanning from the early 1990s to 2011. On July 13, 2023, police arrested Rex Heuermann outside his office in Manhattan (New York City), and have since charged him with 6 of the killings. Filmmaker Josh Zeman joins to share details of the case, which he documented in the 2016 4-hour docuseries The Killing Season. Josh talks about the circumstances that led to the discovery of multiple bodies and human remains, how they were identified, the way the police ultimately found and arrested suspect Rex Heuermann, and why it took law enforcement so long to find him! He talks about the technology that brought Rex down and the voicemail that Josh received seven years ago, which was likely from Rex himself!
