System Of A Down surprised fans when they released new material in 2020 to benefit humanitarian efforts in Armenia. It was the first new tunes from the influential metal group since 2005, but it had seemed that the band was unlikely to do much else. Until now, that is.

Singer Serj Tankian was recently interviewed by Kyle Meredith, and he alluded the band was up to something. He just didn’t say what.

“As of now, we haven’t talked about anything,” he said. “We will be making an announcement about something next year that I can’t really tell you about. So there is that. But further than that, I can’t really say.”

Tankian had previously said no to new System Of A Down record, but it’s possible the singer and the band’s stance on that has changed given his comments.

Tankian also said he had a new System Of A Down album in mind at one point when he was writing the songs that he ended up releasing solo.

“When I conceived possibly doing another record with the guys from System Of A Down a few years back, I started working on a set of songs that I arranged in rock format for that purpose,” he said. “As we weren’t able to see eye to eye on the vision going forward with an System Of A Down album, I decided to release these songs under my moniker.”

In a recent interview with Revolver, Tankian talked about how fans yell “Wake up!” at him referencing the first line to the band’s mega-hit, “Chop Suey.” “People will scare the sh*t outta me and yell ‘wake up’ behind me like, somewhere, wherever, in public,” he said. “[They’re] like ‘WAKE UP!’ [and] I’m like ‘F*ck, dude!… Really?!?? Like, ‘Wow, hey… I’m glad you’re excited, but don’t do that!”

Tankian was also recently asked to define nu-metal as a genre. “Nü-Metal would probably be… If I was to find a particular definition for it, it would be: Low bass, low tempo, dark, metal music that came out of LA in [the early 2000s].”
