The science fiction horror drama “Stranger Things” premiered on Netflix in 2016, and the series earned widespread critical and audience acclaim. Set in the 1980s in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana, the show was created by the Duffer Brothers and sports a cast including Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Finn Wolfhard and Millie Bobby Brown, among many others. Pop culture references to the ’80s have made the series a hit for fans of nostalgia while also attracting a widespread new audience of all ages. On Tuesday, Netflix released the first trailer for “Stranger Things 4 Vol. 1,” and it certainly sports a demonic, metal feel. It features a guitarist shredding on a B.C. Rich and also uses a re-mixed version of Journey’s heaviest song, “Separate Ways.”

“A war is coming,” Paul Reiser’s Dr. Owens warns Millie Bobbie Brown’s Eleven in the trailer. “I don’t know how else to say this other than just to say it. Without you, we can’t win this war.” Netflix’s official plot description of Season 4 is, “It’s been six months since the Battle of Starcourt, which brought terror and destruction to Hawkins. Struggling with the aftermath, our group of friends are separated for the first time — and navigating the complexities of high school hasn’t made things any easier. In this most vulnerable time, a new and horrifying supernatural threat surfaces, presenting a gruesome mystery that, if solved, might finally put an end to the horrors of the Upside Down.”

While the trailer indicates that the new season may lean a little more toward the horror genre, there are certainly elements of nostalgia, too, with roller rinks, ’80s haircuts and obviously the 1983 Journey hit. The series will debut in two parts. The first on May 27 and the second on July 1, both just prior to holiday weekends. The show’s creators and producers, brothers Matt and Ross Duffer, said that “Stranger Things 4” is the “most challenging season yet, but also the most rewarding one.” Netflix had also previously announced that “Stranger Things” will conclude after season 5. The last season of the show aired in 2019. The series has spawned tie-in novels, comic books, tabletop games, mobile games, Lego sets and more.
