Social Media Reacts To CM Punk Being Announced For WWE’s Next Show In Saudi Arabia

When CM Punk re-signed with WWE, his online detractors immediately began speculating about whether he would wrestle on one of the company’s high-profile shows in Saudi Arabia. This was a discussion point because the self-proclaimed “Voice of the Voiceless” had previously called out The Miz on social media for sucking a “blood money-covered d*ck in Saudi Arabia,” and therefore his participation would be deemed hypocritical.

And while Punk has avoided shows in the country so far, social media has now gone into overdrive after it was announced during this week’s Raw episode that he will be wrestling John Cena at Night of Champions. This is notable as the show will be taking place at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, and unless it’s a swerve, indicates that he either caved to pressure from management or was offered so much “blood money” he agreed to put his principles aside.

WWE began running house shows in Saudi Arabia back in 2014 and subsequently signed a mega-money deal to hold annual premium live events there. Still, a significant number of WWE’s critics have voiced concern over the company’s willingness to work with a country that doesn’t permit LGBT equality, has committed human rights abuses, and suppresses women. Yet defenders of the arrangement argue that WWE’s involvement has helped bring about a positive change and, therefore, should actually be commended.
