While many in the music industry consider producer Rick Rubin to be a legend and a surefire way to reinvigorate or further the careers of the artists he works with, some have said that their experiences with him at the helm have been less than satisfactory. Rubin has done iconic work with artists like Johnny Cash, Red Hot Chili Peppers and The Beastie Boys, yet bands like AC/DC, Black Sabbath and Slipknot have all taken issue with his mostly hands-off approach to production.
Slipknot’s Corey Taylor had previously criticized Rubin after working with him on the band’s “Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses)” album. “We were being charged horrendous amounts of money,” Taylor said at the time. “And for me, if you’re going to produce something, you’re f*cking there. I don’t care who you are! He is overrated, he is overpaid, and I will never work with him again.”
While Taylor backtracked his comments a few years later, his bandmate, M. Shawn “Clown” Crahan threw a dig at Rubin in a recent interview with The Escapist. While talking on the subject of AI and how it can be used creatively, Crahan said: “What’s the difference between me pulling out my pocket producer… or me trying to get a famous producer that might not even work with me and could potentially cost me $150,000… who will only give me one or two ways — I’m not mentioning any names!”
