Slayer guitarist Kerry King previously said he was upset with the band’s retirement. The thrash legend felt the group had more in the tank, but they hung it up in 2019. King has since decided to start his own band, and Slayer fans have been anxious to hear more details about the project.

In a new interview with Metal Hammer, King said Slayer fans will be excited to hear that he doesn’t plan to stray too far from his longtime band’s iconic sound.

“If I was ever to try anything different, I guess that would be the time,” King said. “But no, I really have no desire to do anything different. If I wasn’t in Slayer, I would be a Slayer fan. So yes, I think it’s an extension of Slayer, and I think a lot of people will think it might have been the next record. I guess maybe 80% of it would have been, maybe it would have been exactly what I’m putting on this one. In my eyes, I think it’s a definite extension, a follow-up to [Slayer’s 2015 final album] ‘Repentless’ for sure.”

King said every aspect his new project will be reminiscent of one era of Slayer or another. “Pretty much any aspect of any kind of music we’ve done in our history, I think you’ll find on this record,” he said.

King also reiterated what he said previously about Slayer retiring too soon.

“It was premature,” he said. “The reason I say ‘premature’ is because my heroes from my childhood are still playing! I can still play, I still want to play, but that livelihood got taken away from me. But, anyway, on to the next chapter, I guess. We were on top of the world, and there’s nothing wrong with going out on top of the world, it’s a good way to go out. So, bravo for that. But do I miss playing? Yeah, absolutely.”
